A Plus Size Princess & Her Luggage

I was on the M60 bus last night and there was a girl who was on her way to La Guardia Airport. She had the tiniest suitcase with her and I thought to myself… wow, I think I could fit one pair of my jeans in that carry-on… if I rolled them super tight

Even if I’m going away for a weekend and am bringing three outfits, there is no way I could fit everything in one of those black square suitcases that people wheel around. My bras alone need their own duffel bag and if its winter and I’m packing bulky sweaters? Forget about it!

I never realized that I probably pack for trips differently because my clothes take up more space. Little tricks like putting four pairs of socks into my bra cups to save space probably don’t come up for everyone but as a Plus Size Princess, things like that are second nature when I’m preparing for a trip.

I’m not even going to mention the fact that I’m a high maintenance PSP because that means that I’ve got lots of creams, powders, tubes, trinkets and accessories that I have to pack when I travel, so my luggage will probably always need to be on the medium-large end even if I’m only going away for a few days. Its nothing to complain about really, I’m just fascinated that I didn’t realize this before.

There are so many random things that come along with being a Plus Size Princess; we’ve got to combat chub rub or handle the sweat between our boobies or worry about the seatbelts on the plane fitting us. Now I’m adding “required to have roomier luggage” to the list.

    I was thinking about that last weekend! I went to a conference with a friend from school. She brought a small duffle bag an it wasn’t even full! I had a slightly larger duffle and it was packed full to the point the zipper was almost pulling. We brought the same amount of outfits. It was at that moment I realized I hadn’t been overpacking all these years, I just needed the extra space! Glad I’m not the only one!!

    This happens to me often, but I do my best to combat it because I don’t want to have to pay for checking a bag for a long weekend trip even though my stuff is just more. My best packing job was when I managed a four day weekend trip to Vegas with a large gym bag! It is a miracle the zipper didn’t pop, but I managed. I roll things ruthlessly and don’t allow for indecision. I also wear layers on the plane and bring things I can wear in multiple situations. It is difficult but sometimes I succeed at it.

    This is super funny to me because I asked Santa for a bigger carry-on this year. I like having options although I pare things down as much as possible but I still end up having to fight to get my bag zipped. And don’t even get me started with my primping goodies. I am a bit of a toiletry whore so I have to take a million lotions, potions, elixirs and creams. We were travelling recently on a weekend excursion and there was a girl who had all of her goods for the weekend stuffed in a large back pack. There is no way! LOL!

    Well…it is winter and I like my sweaters…but in the summer I like little dresses and flat sandles and I can do a small bag just fine.

    I don’t have this problem anymore! Yaaaay! But yep I remember feeling like “what am I doing wrong?!” LOL

    I am now the queen of the carry on… even for 5 days! The only challenge is when I want multiple pairs of shoes! Otherwise? I’m golden. Those checked bag fees are ridiculous!

    Ha – are you sure that it’s not because you’re a princess and that size doesn’t have much to do with it? I still pack for a weekend like I’m leaving for a month because I can’t choose just 3 outfits and I want to have more of the choices that I have in my closet. I’m allergic to so many things that I don’t even have to pack a lot of bath and beauty projects but I still need a full suitcase. My shoes alone need a carry-on.

    This is why I count my blessings living in Texas – I can fly Southwest pretty much anywhere and check a bag for free! I am a serious overpacker, and there is no way I could survive with a carry on only. That being said, I have gotten to wear I can take one carryon size suitcase and one laptop bag for weekend trips. I am so proud :)
