Texting & Dating: One Week Rule
Are any of you watching Tough Love: Miami on VH1? Last week Steve, the matchmaker/dating coach, did an exercise on texting with the “hopelessly single” women he works with. I’m not a huge fan of texting unless I know the person really well, in my experience too much gets lost in translation and so I try to avoid it at all costs. For some reason guys LOVE to text so this week I thought we could talk about some of the things guys do via text that’s just ridiculous. Ready? Lets begin!
Stewart was a guy that I met at a party through friends. He was new to New York and we hit it off dancing at a party. He was a perfect gentleman and was kind of shy about asking for my number, which was adorable. We met on a Saturday and on Sunday Stewart sent me a text to say hello. We texted back and for for the duration of the day and Sunday evening he called me and we spoke for about 10 minutes.
Monday morning, he sent me a text Good morning, hope you have a good day at work.
Monday afternoon he sent me another text Hi, hows your day going?
I responded to his text messages while I was at work, but as the week went on, a pattern formed. Stewart text me to check on me in the morning, afternoon and evening. But the text conversations never went anywhere. Other than “fine” and “thanks, you too” I was running out of ways to respond to him. Did he think we were getting to know each other? If he did, he was sadly mistaken.
I decided to give him 7 days to make plans to see me again, if he didn’t I would assume he was looking for a pen pal or something.
Friday night, he called me and asked what I was doing that weekend, “I don’t have any plans,” I told him.
“Me either, I’m just here at the house,” he replied.
“Cool,” I held my breath waiting for him to suggest that we do “nothing” together.
“Alright well, I’ll call you tomorrow,” he said.
…and that was it.
He continued to text me morning/noon/night for the next few days but I just stopped responding. In the past I may have pestered him about making plans, but I just felt the whole thing was silly.
Why do guys try to maintain relationships purely via text? I’ve read that it’s a way to keep girls on the back-burner “just in case”.
Whatever the reason, after 7 days of texting I just give up!
